After weeks of anticipation and planning, the TLLP team visited the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre (OCTC), in Ottawa! It was a bit of a whirlwind, flying in on Thursday evening and home by Friday night, but it was definitely worth it. After reaching out and connecting with Mari, the school's principal, we made arrangements to visit OCTC. Deb, Allison and I spent the better part of a day touring, observing and collaborating with both the principal and school liaison teachers. As was the case for our previous school visits, a lot of interesting and important dialogue came to light during our time at OCTC. Two of the most salient pieces were, 1) differences in delivery model, 2) the need for PD specific to section 68 schools, and 3) feelings of isolation and desire for collaboration between the six section 68 schools. November 26, 2018 Glenwood Day School Visit
ReplyDeleteGlenwood has a large percentage of students who have been unsuccessful regulating in community schools. The school has been environmentally adapted to accommodate them.
Outdoor playground with wheelchair ramp so students can access the structure
Multiple adapted outdoor swings as many of their students (as do ours) benefit from the vestibular movement
The life skills class (similar to our FSP2 population) work on true life skills. Their classroom is set up like an apartment.
Students learn to make the bed
Students learn to do laundry, fold clothes, sort clothes and put them away in PCS labeled drawers
Kitchen full PCS labeling: students participate in groceries and money management, cooking, setting table for a group, washing dishes and putting them away, menu creation.
In the apartment everyone has a job task board (PCS) for the week. Jobs include sweeping, mopping, dusting, laundry, watering plants, washing dishes, drying dishes. These tasks and life skills happen daily in addition to literacy and numeracy.
The school has created a classroom size Snoezelen room that children have access to daily
The principal of the school is TEACCH trained at Chapel Hill in NC so many students and teachers are using the program and it has been adapted in small parts into other classrooms
Simple easy trick we could have Kevin do for our classrooms. I love that the sensory bins can be individual but the proximity to others encourages social engagement as opposed to parallel play especially for my friends on the spectrum
Complex needs class IEP goals listed in classroom love that it”s whiteboard so truly a working document as you can add modify erase etc.
This school modifies the environment to put cheap Etrans in every environment rather than always travelling bulky boards with child. Kevin could make these super easily. I like that they can be choice boards, task analysis boards, schedule boards, and in every environment.
This school has a diverse population including low vision. Every room in building is labeled by word, sign, PCS and tactile symbol!!
The school also has a bulletin board by the office. The whole school participates in core word of the week. An activity board and single message button with the word are available to all each week
Also the school participates in school wide cross graded activities each week to encourage proper socialization and self regulation in larger group environments. They have school wide dances, Special Olympics, colour celebrations etc.
